Tips For A Comfortable Hair Salon Visit As Someone With Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis can be itchy and physically uncomfortable. But there is a whole other kind of discomfort that arises in many psoriasis patients when it comes time to visit the hair salon. You may worry that your stylist won't understand what's wrong with your scalp, or concerned that they'll use products or techniques that make your symptoms worse. You wish you could just make your psoriasis go away for your appointment — but you can't. You can, however, follow these tips for a more comfortable hair salon visit.

Schedule your appointment when your symptoms are less serious.

Many patients with psoriasis have periods during which the condition is flaring up and other periods during which their symptoms are less serious. If possible, wait until your symptoms are less serious, and then call for an appointment, ideally during the next couple of days before your symptoms have a chance to flare up again. You won't be as self-conscious, and you won't have to worry quite as much about irritation this way.

Let your stylist know ahead of time.

When you call to make the appointment, let the stylist know that you have psoriasis. This will keep you from having to explain what's wrong in person, which can be harder. You also don't have to worry about your stylist being caught off guard when they see your patches. If you're making an appointment at a salon with multiple stylists, ask the receptionist to pair you with the stylist who has the most experience with psoriasis patients.

Wash your hair at home, if possible.

Rather than having the stylist wash your hair before cutting, wash it at home. This way, you can use cool water and whatever shampoos you've found to be most friendly to your needs. If you do want to have your hair washed at the salon, consider bringing your own shampoo and conditioner with you. This keeps you from having to worry whether the products the salon uses will irritate your scalp. Make sure you remind your stylist to use lukewarm or cool water on your hair, too. Most stylists should know this is important with scalp psoriasis, but an extra reminder never hurts.

As someone with psoriasis, visiting the hair salon may not be one of your favorite things to do, but with the tips above, you can have a much more pleasant appointment. Once you find a stylist who you feel comfortable with, and who addresses your needs well, make sure you stick with them.
